Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
